Cimarron Canyon State Park held it's 27th annual kids fishing derby on May 11th this year. The park is located a few miles east of Eagle Nest and about 20 miles east of Angel Fire. The elevation is close to 8000 feet.

The temperature reached into the 90's when I was staying at Elephant Butte a few weeks ago. I was looking forward to heading up into the mountains where it was bound to be cooler. Well, I have learned to be careful what you wish for, or at least to be specific.
See, while I was thinking about highs in the 60's, a cold front blew into the northern part of the state bringing temps 30 degrees below normal.
But it was beautiful!
That was Thursday morning, by Friday most of the snow was gone and the trout arrived in their limousine.
Some did not want to leave and tried to get back inside.
There were about a dozen in the 24 to 28 inch range.
There are about 35 trout in this photo.
Which made me wonder what they were thinking in their little trout brains.
Timmy Trout "Wow, we made it! Our new home!"
Tommy Trout " All this room!"
Tina Trout "I can't wait to explore!"
I was thinking that was all true. For about 18 hours...
Saturday morning was perfect. Cool and crisp with hungry trout cruising the lakes.
Registration started at 9:00am and the horn sounded at 10:00am to begin fishing.
I wonder if Timmy, Tommy, and Tina survived to swim another day.
New Mexico native Smokey the Bear showed up to the delight of the kids.
Prizes were given out for the largest fish in different age categories.
The biggest overall was a tad over 17 inches.
Everyone had a great time.
Sunday morning was Mother's Day and I took Freddy for a sunrise walk and told him about a wonderful women he never met. He seemed to understand.
There are beautiful trails around the lake.
And sometimes a little lens flare reminds you of someone who left you way too soon.
Regards,
Greg and Freddy
Love that fish swimming upstream (up-truck?)! Happy Mother's Day. Looks like a fun weekend
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures - thanks for posting the event and I too love seeing those fish trying to get back in the "Limo".
ReplyDeleteWoody, beautiful photos as always. The last one plus comment brought a tear to my eye. Maybe more pics of Smokey next year.
