26th Annual Children's Fishing Derby Cimarron Canyon State Park

OK, this blog post is a little different.

On Saturday May 12th the 26th annual children's fishing derby was held at Cimarron Canyon State Park.

So this is not a detailed report of the park.

This post is all about kids having fun. And catching fish. There might even be a bear involved.

Registration began at 8am. The kids received received a t-shirt and a goody bag.

The horn sounded at 10am and the madness began.

The shirts reflecting in the lake were neat. Kinda like a rainbow.

This was the biggest trout I came across. A beautiful rainbow.

Around 11:30am rumors flashed around the lakes that a bear was spotted.

Yep, Smokey had arrived.

I trailed him around the lake.

He seemed harmless and the kids loved him. Adults as well.

The picture below reminded me of the old Yogi Bear cartoon with Mr. Ranger lurking in the bushes.

Finally, there was a wonderful barbecue with hot dogs and hamburgers.

The derby was a great success. Over 125 kids participated. Cars filled the campground and the roadsides. A volunteer was stationed at the entrance to help direct traffic.

Freddy did a great job.
